As a dog enthusiasts, we find the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program to be an incredibly rewarding experience for both puppies and their owners. This class is designed to help puppies start off on the right paw by focusing on Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility—the core pillars of the program.
What the Class Covers:
In our S.T.A.R. Puppy classes, we work on teaching foundational skills that will set puppies up for a lifetime of good behavior. These include:
- Basic Commands: We guide owners in teaching their puppies essential cues like “sit,” “down,” “stay,” “come,” and loose-leash walking.
- Socialization: We expose puppies to a variety of people, other dogs, sights, and sounds in a controlled environment. This is crucial for building their confidence and ensuring they grow into well-mannered adult dogs.
- Good Behavior Basics: Owners learn how to address common puppy challenges, such as jumping up, chewing, and nipping, using positive reinforcement techniques.
Owner Involvement:
One of our favorite aspects of this program is the focus on owner education. We teach practical tips on responsible pet ownership, such as proper feeding, grooming, and veterinary care. The goal is to help owners understand their puppies better, creating a strong bond based on trust and consistency.
The Journey to Certification:
Throughout the program, we evaluate both the puppies’ progress and the owners’ commitment. At the end of the course, participants who meet the program requirements earn the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate. This is more than just a recognition—it’s a testament to the owner’s dedication and the puppy’s hard work.
